Triple Champion Hurdle winning jockey Steve Smith Eccles previews the action.

Steve Smith EcclesPlenty of poor quality racing today if you like that sort of thing but what is lacking in quality is made up for in quantity with meetings Countrywide.

Redcar put on the main card this afternoon and I was sorely tempted to back MONAADEMA in the 4.25 with the Haggas yard in excellent form this season. Unraced as a two year old, she has been given plenty of time to mature and that patience has been paying dividends if her recent homework can be transferred to the track and in receipt of five pounds from the forecast favourite she may well give Film Maker most to do in a race that may not take that much winning.

At Leicester, the one I was interested in was YAHWUDHEE in the maiden at 2.00 but with the Peter Chapple-Hyam horses a bit hit and miss this season, I cannot justify an account bet. He had a nice introduction when fourth to Aqlaam at Newbury nine days ago and the winner is considered pretty decent, and was in front approaching the final furlong but faded late on and will strip considerably fitter for the run. A big run is expected this afternoon of one of the yards main owners and he should prove difficult to keep out of the frame.

A poor card at Carlisle is best avoided but I do wonder whether it could be worth laying a Sir Mark Prescott good thing in the 3.30 at Chepstow?

Opposing the master trainer is always risky yet I cannot help but feel the odds on about MASTER OF ARTS with up to sixteen rivals. Yes he did win last time out at Wolverhampton as he pleased yet there is no evidence he will be as effective on the turf and carries a six pound penalty today and if he repeats his antics on the dirt (hanging badly) here then there is every chance he could get beaten. Being odds on the risks are minimal and for those who like that sort of thing, a lay is recommended.

The combination of trainer Michael Jarvis and jockey Philip Robinson is close to irresistible and in a wide open Zetland Gold Cup FRAGRANCY must have a chance, this four year old filly has improved for her reappearance third and is fully expected to appreciate the step up to a mile and a quarter this afternoon.
