Racing expert Dale McKeown gives an overview of the day's top equine action.

Dale McKeownAt Ascot, dual purpose trainer Alan King brought Shipmaster back off a break to claim the Group 3 Sagaro. Even though the race was run at a steady gallop, the two miles still took some getting as the heavy rain had eased the ground somewhat. With all six close up turning for home it was difficult to call the race but no sooner did they straighten the winner and Peppertree Lane surged clear with Peppertree Lane getting on top with a furlong to go. However, lack of stamina came into play and Shipmaster, under a strong drive from Richard Hughes, came back on the rail to claim the victory.

James Fanshawe and Jamie Spencer look as though they are going to have yet another productive year if the win of Cesare is anything to go by. Racing in the familiar red colours of the Cheveley Park Stud the 7 yr old laughed at his younger rivals winning on the bridle by a very comfortable length and he now heads for the Group 1 Lockinge at Newbury. The duo doubled up with last year’s Gimcrack winner Sir Gerry. Once again held up early, Sir Gerry quickened this time under a drive to go away from Tajdeef who ran well considering this would not be his ground.

Earlier on the card Rosaleen paid a compliment to the claims of 1000 Guineas hopeful Infallible by winning the X Factor Stakes. Held up by Frankie Dettori, the well supported Rosaleen made headway on the outside to grab the leader Bramaputra inside the final furlong with a five length gap back to the third Kay Es Jay.

The Johnny Portman trained juvenile Baycat made it two from two with a comfortable success in the opener and racing ended with a fifteen runner mile handicap that betting suggested was a one horse affair and so it proved as Bankable, in workmanlike style, completed a double for Frankie by beating Tastahil and he now heads to the Hunt Cup.
