Katchit set to go Bonus-Chasing
Racing Post - 2007-10-29

KATCHIT goes bonus-chasing in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle next month after opening this campaign as he spent most of last - beating rivals into submission, writes John Sexton.

The little horse with the big heart simply loves to win and at Aintree on Sunday that indomitable attitude did him proud again as he gave 15lb and a beating to the talented Degas Art in the 2m limited handicap hurdle.

Bookmakers, who already quoted him second favourite to defending-champion Sublimityfor the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle, were impressed and cut him to a general 5-1. Betfred, who were 13-2 before the race, now go 6-1.

All being well, Katchit will be running for the £1 million bonus put up by betting exchange WBX in the Champion Hurdle. It is on offer for any horse winning the Fighting Fifth, the Christmas Hurdle and the Champion Hurdle.

“The result of the Fighting Fifth will determine where Katchit goes afterwards” said winning trainer Alan King. “If he wins at Newcastle, he will go for the bonus and that means the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton rather than the Bula.

“It will break my heart to miss Cheltenham, but it is just impossible to run in both races. Only if he is beaten at Newcastle will he go to the Bula.” Katchit looked to be in some trouble at the second-last, but then Denis O'Regan allowed Degas Art to drift right towards his rival and once the horses came upsides each other, there was only going to be one winner.

Degas Art is also an intended runner in the Fighting Fifth, but owner Graham Wylie admitted: “If we were ever going to beat Katchit, it was today.”
