Katchit All Set For Return To Big Money Trail
Racing Post - 2007-10-25
LAST season's Triumph Hurdle hero Katchit is all set for his reappearance at Aintree at the weekend but connections are already eyeing the £1 million bonus offered by WBX.COM for any horse winning Britain's three Grade 1 2m hurdle races outside the novice division, writes Gordon Brown
Trainer Alan King confirmed on Wednesday that Kachit will tackle Sunday's limited handicap before starting on the big money trail in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle on December 1. Allbeing well he will head for the second leg in Kempton Christmas Hurdle on his way to the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham in March.
The WBX cash bonanza went unclaimed last term and recently-deceased 1989 Champion Hurdle winner Kribensis remains the only horse to have landed the treble in the same season.
“There isn't a lot of Katchit but he certainly seems a little bit stronger after his summer break,” King said. “His work has been very good and he's a real star. The ground at Aintree will be fine for him and he'll be pretty straight as we've done a fair bit with him.
“He's keeping most of the others a long way out of the weights and although he's won at the track, he's pretty adaptable and will act round anywhere. “We won't be using lack of a run as an excuse and I just want to get him started as this looks the ideal race before hopefully heading off for the Fighting Fifth.
“We thought about the Bula Hurdle but, if he won at Newcastle, we would have to try for the million. If he happened to get beat in the Fighting Fifth we would probably go down the Bula route and miss Kempton. Only time will tell us if he's a Champion Hurdle horse.”
