The French Furze's seven consecutive appearances in the 'Fighting Fifth' Hurdle are to be honoured with a race named after him on the same card this year.

The WBX.COM "French Furze" Novices' Hurdle over two and three-quarter miles will be run at Newcastle on December 1 to highlight the achievements of the Nicky Richards-trained 13-year-old.

The French Furze was runner-up in the 'Fighting Fifth' at the first attempt in 2000 when trained by Martin Pipe and occupied the same position the following two years after joining Richards.

He won the race in 2003 and has finished fifth and third twice in subsequent years.

WBX.COM spokesman Iain Turner said: "He has become something of an institution on WBX.COM 'Fighting Fifth' Hurdle day and we felt it only right we mark his achievements."
