WBX To Put Up £1m Hurdling Bonus Again
Racing Post - 2007-09-07
WBX.COM, one of the potential rivals to Betfair’s betting exchange dominance, are once again to offer £1 million to any horse winning Britain’s Grade 1 hurdles over 2m, writes Fabrice Tomlin.
In order to claim the prize, the successful horse must land the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle, the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton and the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
The bonus scheme, which marks the first anniversary of wbx.com, offers £100,000 to the winner’s groom and £50,000 to the remainder of the stable staff. The lion’ share of £700,000 would go to the owner, with the trainer pocketing £150,000.
Leading candidates, including Champion Hurdle hero Sublimity and Triumph Hurdle winner Katchit, are expected to be aimed at the WBX bonus.
Kribensis, in 1989, is the only horse to have won the Fighting Fifth, Christmas Hurdle and Champion Hurdle in the same season.
WBX, who sponsored almost 200 races before even launching their website, have outlined a grandiose version for their triple crown, aiming to “create a championship series that will form the benchmark against which the great horses of this and future generations will be measured”
WBX’s major shareholder Malcolm Gray, said: “ The hurdling triple crown remains an important part of our commitment to National Hunt racing and is the perfect complement to our sponsorship of the Fighting Fifth hurdle. The £1m bonus is the biggest to have ever been offered in hurdling, and we hope that it will encourage the best two-mile hurdlers in Britain and Ireland to face up to each other more often en route to the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham.”
